Things that made me wonder...


While hiking that crazy steep hike, we found this; a tree that a bear had scratched, looking for grubs.  I use my iPhone most of the time for photos, and I confess I could have a better camera.  So you might not be able to see the grooves his claws left.  But you can probably see the yellow rectangle about halfway up.  That is a packet of cheese that someone left as an offering for the bear.  They left it unwrapped, so, yeah, that's gonna taste good.


Am I right?


Here's another example.  Gatlinburg, TN.  Millions flock there for vacations, and I gotta ask, why?  The crowds are obnoxious.  The "merchandise" is tacky, and Chinese.  The food probably rates about 2 stars, while there are 4 and 5 star eats just 5 miles away, at small, local restaurants and food trucks in the woods.  (If you're ever there, look up Wacky Tacky Tacos.  Oh.  My.)  I'm feeling my judgement, and I am sorry for it.  It is just a question I had to ask.


Here's a bit of loveliness to take the tacky taste out of your mouth.

Time on the Water

We camped several nights at Tahquamenon Falls.  (Look it up.  It's a place.)  While there, we decided to rent kayaks, and a canoe.  Jay and Kris had joined us. The water was clear on the river.  I tried to show you some fish here.  I tried.   It was a gorgeous day, cool and sunny.  Perfect for being out on the river. Jay and Kris in the double kayak, young John in the single. Zoom in on his grin.  He was born to do this. Molly also joined us.  This was just before she started trying to jump in.  It was worrisome, until John figured out that she wasn't trying to jump in, but to drink some water!  Good dog owners that we are, it slipped our minds to water the dog.  We pulled over, and did just that. And, off again! What does chicken broth have to do with sewage?

 Bwahaha!  Hang on, I'll tell you. One of the things I like most in my housewife-life is cooking.  I especially like to fill the pantry and freezer so that we don't have to worry (as much) about where the next meal is coming from.  I really, especially, like to cook beef and chicken bones into lovely broths that can be used for soups, meals, or even just a hot cup of yumminess on a chilly afternoon. I also like to buy locally from small providers.  If you, dear reader, are buying your hamburger from WalMart, you are not getting the nutrition found in a toothpick.  When we lived in Illinois, it was my goal to grow most of our meats.  I couldn't do much about fish, but we grew pork, poultry, lamb and goat.  Our freezer was always full, and we felt RICH.  Now that we're on the road, I like to find local meat markets, farm markets, and even family farms from which to buy our supper ingredients.
